Granule loss: When should you be concerned?

Damaged shingles

Granule loss from asphalt shingles tends to cause concern for homeowners, which is completely understandable. However, granule loss is not always a cause for concern. It’s completely normal—to an extent.

Let’s discuss the purpose of granules and when you should be concerned about granule loss.

What are asphalt granules?

If you have an asphalt roof, you’ll notice a grainy texture on your roof’s tiles. These are granules, and they are a vital component in protecting your home.

Granules are made of crushed stone and other materials, all contributing to your roof’s stability and function. One of the primary purposes of a roof is to protect your home from different types of weather, and granules cause water to slide off your shingles and down your roof rather than allow it to be absorbed.

Granules also provide UV protection, keeping sunlight from deteriorating your roof. In warmer climates, some granules are coated to reflect sunlight, and further protect your home.

Causes of granule loss

Some granule loss is normal and inevitable. In fact, asphalt shingles are designed for this. Some causes of granule loss are from:

  • Wind and debris
  • Foot traffic
  • Hail and storm damage
  • Aging
  • Manufacturing defects
  • Extreme temperature changes

You may notice granule loss if you have a brand new roof. Don’t worry, that’s normal. If your roof is old, granule loss is also to be expected.

When you should be concerned

Minor loss will be ongoing, but you must keep an eye on how much is falling off. If you notice bald spots, that is a cause for concern, and you should get a roof inspection sooner rather than later.

If your roof is brand new and you notice bald spots, it could be a manufacturer issue. It’s important that you contact your contractor as soon as possible so they can fix the problem.
