Oklahomans know all too well how storms can wreak havoc, and it’s essential to be as prepared as possible. We always advise our homeowners to have a plan before a storm hits.
Shelter
If you have a storm shelter at your home, make sure it is registered with the city so rescue teams will know where to find you if needed.
You will want to be comfortable and safe while in your shelter, so it’s necessary to rid it of dust and pests, inspect for any water damage, and ensure it is well-ventilated. You will also want food, water, flashlights, a first-aid kit, a change of clothing, and important documents.
We recommend storing all documents and photos in cloud storage to ensure they are never lost. If you have kids, it helps to have activities so they do not get bored or overly worried, and bring a leash if you have a pet. Also, remember to charge your cell phone and put your shoes on before entering your shelter.
Not everyone has a shelter at home, and there may not be a public shelter in your area, so make sure you communicate with your family so everyone knows the plan.
Home inspection
It’s a good idea to take before and after photos of your home so you have them for insurance purposes if you ever need to file a claim.
After the storm, walk around your house to check for missing or damaged shingles. Wind can do as much damage as hail, and even a few missing shingles can cause a leak that, if left unfixed, will do more damage, costing more money in the long run.
There are often hard-to-see places, so getting an inspection from a professional may be necessary. A roof inspection is usually free of charge.
Repair
If a significant issue happens, such as a tree falling on your roof, you may be worried about the cost. It’s best to go ahead and pay to have it taken care of and submit the repair for reimbursement by your insurance company. Having a roofer you trust to fix the issue is vital.
