If you’ve lived in Oklahoma long, you know spring weather is no joke. Between high winds, hail, and—most recently—a wind storm that kicked up a lot of dust—your home’s roof takes a beating this time of year.
The good news? You don’t have to figure out storm damage on your own. At Land Enterprises Roofing, we always offer free inspections and are happy to take a look. But if you’re the type who likes to assess things right away, here’s a quick and safe self-inspection checklist to help you spot visible signs of damage.
Walk the yard
Once it’s safe to head outside, walk around your home and check the ground. Look for shingles in your yard or around the perimeter of your house. These might look like dark, flat pieces of material or edges that appear torn or curled. Flying debris or tree limbs on the ground may also indicate that your roof caught some impact.
Given the recent wind storm and all the dust it carried, it’s worth noting that excessive dust might wear on shingle granules over time—especially on older roofs. While it’s still unclear how much dust alone contributes to granule loss, the combination of wind and debris can speed up normal aging. Look for signs of wear and tear that this abrasive mix may have accelerated.
Scan the roof from the ground
From a safe distance, look up at your roof for any visible bald spots—areas where granules have worn away, revealing shiny or discolored patches. Missing or lifted shingles are another red flag. If you have metal flashing near a chimney, skylight, or vent, ensure it’s still firmly in place and hasn’t pulled up.
You don’t need a ladder or drone to spot most major issues. If something looks off or uneven from the ground, it’s worth calling us to investigate further.
Don’t skip gutters
Your gutters are the unsung heroes of your home’s drainage system, and storms can do a number on them. Ensure your gutters are securely attached and not sagging or overflowing with debris. With all the high winds and dust lately, even well-maintained gutters may be packed with leaves, sticks—or, more likely this time—dirt and grit.
Also, take a peek at what’s inside. If you spot lots of little granules (they look like coarse sand), that could mean your shingles are deteriorating faster than expected. Granule loss is normal over time, but if you’re seeing bare spots on your shingles or are concerned about the amount collecting in your gutters, we can take a look to make sure it’s not a sign of a larger problem.
Look for leaks inside
Once you’ve done a loop outside, head indoors and check your ceilings for any signs of leaks or moisture. Look for water stains, bubbling paint, or discoloration—especially in corners or near vents. If you have attic access, grab a flashlight and check for damp wood, moldy smells, or sunlight peeking through where it shouldn’t be.
Leaks don’t always show up immediately, so check your ceilings for a few days after any significant storm.
What to do if something looks amiss
If anything you see makes you pause—even if you’re not totally sure what you’re looking at—call us. Land Enterprises Roofing offers free, no-pressure inspections, and we’ll give you an honest assessment of what’s going on. Whether it’s minor wear or serious damage, we’ll help you figure out the next steps, including working with insurance if needed.
Want a pro keeping an eye on things?
While self-inspections are helpful, the best way to avoid roof issues is to follow a regular maintenance plan. Our Roof Maintenance Program gives homeowners peace of mind by providing scheduled inspections, photo documentation, and minor repairs to help keep their roofs performing as they are supposed to.
This means year after year—whether it’s hail, high winds, or another surprise wind storm—someone is actively ensuring your roof is holding up. We’ll even keep records on file for you, so if you ever need to file an insurance claim or use your manufacturer warranty, you’ll have precisely what you need.
Storms are a fact of life here in Oklahoma—but roof surprises don’t have to be. Do a quick self-inspection, give us a call for a free look, or ask about our Roof Maintenance Program to stay protected all year long.
