Top 5 roofing lessons from 2025 (and how to plan for 2026)
If 2025 taught us anything, it’s that Oklahoma is unlikely to slow down, and neither is the pace of change when it comes to roofing rules, insurance policies, and homeownership in general.
As the year comes to a close, we’re reflecting on some of the biggest lessons we’ve learned while helping homeowners across Edmond, OKC, and beyond. These takeaways aren’t just helpful for us as professionals; they’re also for you, as a homeowner.
Here are the top 5 roofing insights from 2025, along with practical ways to apply them as we enter 2026.
1. The new OKC roofing permit law is here to stay
In August, the City of Oklahoma City began requiring permits for any roofing job exceeding 500 square feet within city limits. That includes roof replacements, repairs, and removals on single-family homes and duplexes.
Why it matters:
This new law is designed to weed out fly-by-night crews and ensure that homeowners receive higher-quality work. But it also added new layers of documentation — including before, during, and after photos — that must be submitted for final inspections.
Our advice:
Make sure your roofer is approved, experienced, and already working within these new guidelines. At Land Enterprises Roofing, we handle the permits, inspections, and required documentation so you don’t have to worry about a thing.
2. Insurance surprises are avoidable if you plan ahead
We’ve seen more than a few homeowners this year run into trouble after a storm, only to discover that their wind or hail coverage wasn’t as comprehensive as they thought it was. Some had high deductibles they didn’t realize. Others had policy gaps that left them underinsured.
Why it matters:
When damage happens, your policy is either going to have your back — or it won’t. The best time to double-check coverage is before a claim ever needs to be filed.
Our advice:
As you head into the new year, schedule a quick review of your insurance. Contact your agent, ask questions, and ensure your policy accurately reflects your current home and roof. If you’re part of our Roof Maintenance Plan, you’ll already have roof condition documentation to support any future claims.
3. Wild weather is the new normal
We had it all this year: hail, heavy wind, ice, and even full-on dust storms. Some storms came in the middle of the night. Others left behind subtle damage that homeowners didn’t even notice until water spots began to appear months later.
Why it matters:
Not all damage is visible from the ground — and waiting until it becomes obvious often means it’s already expensive.
Our advice:
Whether you’ve just had a new roof installed or you’re trying to get a few more years out of your current one, a proactive maintenance plan can save you time, money, and stress. It’s not about being paranoid. It’s about being prepared.
4. Maintenance matters even for new roofs
This was the year we really started driving home the point: new roofs need upkeep, too.
Tree limbs shift, drainage changes, and flashing wear down — and it’s often the minor, early problems that lead to major repairs if ignored.
Why it matters:
Manufacturer warranties can be voided if proper maintenance isn’t documented. Additionally, insurance providers are more likely to deny a claim if negligence can be proven.
Our advice:
Stay ahead of problems by enrolling in our Roof Maintenance Plan. We’ll inspect your roof, document its condition, and keep track of potential issues long before they become expensive surprises. This type of documentation can also help maintain warranties and simplify insurance claims.
5. Big changes? Start talking to your team early
Thinking about moving in 2026? Planning a major remodel? Want to refinance? Increasingly, homeowners are realizing that their roof plays a crucial role in all these decisions.
Why it matters:
Realtors, lenders, and inspectors all take roof age and condition seriously — and delays occur when surprises arise late in the process.
Our advice:
If you’re planning any significant housing or financial changes in the new year, get your roofer involved early. And while you’re at it, check in with your insurance agent and even your future realtor. The earlier you know the condition of your roof, the easier it is to plan and negotiate effectively.
